LG Music Flow Sound System: Wireless Surround Sound Speakers Made Easy
Our last LG pick came out of left field. Since when did LG make speakers, much less WiFi-connected models that compete directly with Sonos? The new line of Music Flow speakers includes a wide variety of sizes and price points, but what caught our attention is the potential for a surround sound home theater setup even more painless, and wireless, than what Sonos has offered (with no real competition, up to now). The $399 soundbar comes with a separate subwoofer, and can sync up wirelessly over a WiFi mesh network to a pair of compact, $199 speakers, positioned as rear channels. The equivalent configuration from Sonos costs about $1,000 more. But LG’s satellite speakers can also run truly wirelessly, powered by built-in rechargeable batteries (for up to 5 hours on WiFi, or 7 with Bluetooth). So instead of creating a permanent surround sound layout, you can keep the rear channels charged and tucked away, and then whip them out for a single movie, without running power cables to wall outlets. We won’t know just how much trouble Sonos is or isn’t in until the spring, when these and other Music Flow speakers will come to the U.S.
