Cotopaxi’s 3-in-1 Tent Can Go Lightweight or Sleep 4

When it comes to tents, we’ve always needed more than one: an ultralight single-person tent for solo missions, a lightweight two-person for overnight trips with a friend, and a larger four-person unit for camping with our families or base camp set-ups.

Cotopaxi’s innovative new Inti 2 finally solves this multiple-tent dilemma once and for all. It offers three different configurations. The tent plus the alcove system weighs in at a total of just over 7 pounds. It incorporates a high-quality, lightweight two-person tent with a sheltered alcove (imagine a large vestibule with a heavy duty nylon floor and attachable rainfly) that can be set up independently from the tent. The tent and alcove snap together, joining to form a spacious four-person tent. Both the tent and alcove include rainflies that can also function independently or joined together. The result is, by far, the most versatile and adaptable backcountry tent system we’ve ever used.

For most of our trips up into the mountains, out in the desert, on the river, or at the beach, the durable two-person, three-season tent ticks all the boxes. The Inti 2 weighs 4 lbs. 9 oz. with the rainfly, and it has about 32 square feet of enclosed space, a removable gear loft, two entrances, and a 40D nylon bathtub-style floor. The setup is quick and easy, and the tent is both symmetrical and freestanding with ample headroom.

When every ounce counts during an multiday expedition or we’re just looking to set up some shade on a hot day at our local crag, the alcove especially fits the bill. Weighing 2 lbs. 8 oz., with a single aluminum pole and options to either use trekking poles or tie off the shock cord to a nearby tree, the alcove sleeps two comfortably while providing enough covered space to shelter gear.

When combined, the tent and alcove becomes a single four-person tent. Perfect for two couples or a small family but still lightweight enough to take deep into the backcountry. All of a sudden our trusty three-tent quiver seems pretty ridiculous.
