All-Weather Hiking Pants
Patagonia Triolet Pants
When mountaineering, a bomber hardshell GORE-TEX pant is a must on stormy or below-freezing days — something that can be put on quickly while on the move and cut the wind. The Triolets are good technical climbing pants — minimal pockets, no liner, slimmer athletic fit — not to be mistaken for more relaxed hardshells that are meant for skiing and snowboarding. They have full side zips so they can be taken on and off without removing boots and crampons, and are meant to be worn in a layering system that includes a base layer and, possibly, a fleece or down pant. TIP: Consider a bib — a pant with suspenders that comes up much higher on the torso — for fuller coverage in instances where snow could get between layers and down your pants.
