A company has developed the first skateboard with brakes. The Australian-based Streetboardz is attempting to gain funds through Kickstarter for the Border Kontrol system that they believe will help bring skateboarding to a much wider market.
“Beginners and children can learn with ease, as the board won’t roll out from underneath them, while good skaters can now hit steep hills without worrying about the dreaded speed wobbles or sudden obstacles,” Tim Vlandis, a former pro snowboarder and one of the teams behind Border Kontrol, told GrindTV.
“Even at pace you can pull up to a stop within seconds. And I’ve stopped wrecking my 100 buck skate shoes too.”
The system uses stainless steel disc brakes and replaceable brake pads. The brakes are operated by a hand-held cable. When you’re not using the leash, it folds away, and the board operates as a normal cruiser skateboard.
The company aims to sell the brakes on their own cruiser boards or as a kit that you can affix to your own skateboard.
