TheraGun G2PRO
While it looks like a power drill and pounds (and sounds) like a jackhammer, the TheraGun G2PRO has been an indispensable piece of my training kit this week. It basically does what your foam roller attempts to: loosens up tight muscles and connective tissue. Foam rollers, whether the standard white barrel or the newer motorized vibrating spheres, just don’t dig deep enough, and certainly can’t apply the kind of pinpointed pressure I need to attack my chronically tight calves—a weak point that leads to Achilles pain if I don’t stay vigilant about stretching. But the handheld G2PRO drills into tight spots. Its foam ball moves only about an inch up and down, but it’s a quick, tenderizing motion that is intense. There’s some science behind why it works, too, as TheraGun reports that the frequency tricks your brain so you don’t feel any pain during the agonizing massaging. All that aside, I can tell you it hurts plenty good, but my calves have felt incredible afterward. [$599; amazon.com] —Jeff Dengate, gear editor
