Land Rover Defender 90/110
Not all splurge purchases need to be sports cars, and the Land Rover Defender is proof. Choosing to spend some money on a Defender 90 or 110 — the numeric value has to do with wheelbase, stretching from 90 to 127 inches in length — shows appreciation for Great Britain’s contributions to the sport-utility market. Land Rover stopped selling the Defender in the U.S. almost 20 years ago, but you can make the smart decision and hunt down an aluminum-bodied Defender of your own. (West Coast Defender in L.A. is a great place to start the search for a lovingly restored one.) If you can tolerate the occasional leak and electrical failure, you’ll come to love this truck because it really can go anywhere. Really. Test it.
