Google’s Home Mini Units Were Recording Way More Than They Were Intended To

The Google Home Mini nearly shipped to customers with a pretty serious software issue: It was recording thousands of times a day without being prompted.

Luckily for Google, Android Police noticed the issue in one of its review Minis and wrote up a lengthy post about how the smart speaker was recording “24/7.” This would have been a massive issue for Google, who will be shipping the products to retail a few days after the software patch fixes the issue on October 15.

The update removes a feature that lets users turn the speaker on just by a simple tap on the top. A number of speakers the company had already made available at “recent Made by Google events” were registering taps when in reality there were none. In some instances recording nearly all the time.

According to The Verge, Google had planned on getting the tap function back on the speaker at a later date, but now they will forget about it entirely. 

Here is Google’s statement about the security breach.

“We learned of an issue impacting a small number of Google Home Mini devices that could cause the touch mechanism to behave incorrectly. We rolled out an update on October 7 to mitigate the issue. If you’re still having issues, please feel free to contact Google Support at 1-855-971-9121 to get a replacement Google Home Mini.”
