Chevrolet Camaro Convertible
» The iconic muscle car got a retro-futuristic makeover at last year’s North American International Auto Show. This year, General Motors decided to go topless. Set to hit dealerships in 2009, the powerful rear-wheel-drive ragtop will boast V-8 power that’s sure to coat Midwestern parking lots in liquid rubber.
» Esteemed design pro Ian Callum’s work for Jaguar over the last few years has focused on somewhat traditional sedans and coupes that borrow liberally from Jaguar’s past. But the C-XF, which is the replacement for the slightly stodgy S-Type, obliterates that mold. Its intimidating snub nose, flared rear haunches, and 4.2-liter, 420-hp V-8 may help redefine British luxury.
» Lincoln’s “guilt-free luxury” concept features owl-friendly appointments such as mohair carpeting, an oak instrument panel made from “re- engineered” material, and soy seat foam. But the tree-huggingest feature is under the stretch hood: The TwinForce 3.5-liter, 415-hp, V-6 twin-turbo direct-injection engine produces American V-8 power while running on E85.
Toyota FT-HS Hybrid
» Toyota execs say the FT-HS embodies J-factor, which “refers to the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural sensibilities.” Translation: The car’s nose looks like Megatron’s face. Even if you loathe it, it’s hard not to love the combo of a 3.5-liter V-6 and Hybrid Synergy Drive that pumps out 400 eco-cuddling horsepower.
Mitsubishi Prototype X
» Flared fenders, a bevy of vents and scoops, and a (relatively) subtle spoiler are what you’d expect from the 10th-generation Evolution. A screaming, turbo-charged four-banger will make it the most powerful Evo ever, but the most significant change is an optional automatic six-speed tranny.
