Run a Dado
To create a recess for the steel panel, you want to make a dado cut, which is a fancy way of saying a slot on the inside edge of all four sides of the box that will hold the steel plate. Drop your table saw’s blade height to a half-inch. Adjust the fence so that it is one-quarter-inch from the blade. Then lay one of the box sides flat and on its side against the fence (be sure the bottom side of the box is against the fence). Use a pushing stick, guide it through to cut a one-eighth slot, a quarter inch from the bottom side of your box. Repeat this for each of the box sides, making sure you’re cutting only the inside edge of each piece.
