Keep soil healthy.
Healthy soil means deeper roots, which in turn means your lawn will bounce back after long periods without rain. Use compost and keep soil aerated: Rocks and earthworms naturally aerate and fertilize. Contact your local USDA Extension office to learn about measuring your soil’s pH to avoid fertilizing too much. Limestone will raise your lawn’s pH, while sulfur will lower it.
