Hugh Herr is leading the way in biomechatronics – a field that studies the merging of mechanical elements to the human body. Laurence Gonzales’ profile of Herr in the December issue of Men’s Fitness revealed much about the man – how he lost his legs in 1982, tacked some new ones on and now is ceaselessly working toward the integration of technology and people, augmenting one’s weakness with mechanical advantages.

At his talk at TEDMED conference in 2010 (below), Herr said, “My personal trajectory motivates the work I do at MIT, even today… I stand before you today supported by artificial structures.”
Indeed, it is these structures that Herr is trying to innovate. He and the men he works with at MIT are reinventing the human machine.
