Rookie quarterback Sam Darnold is ready to start his NFL career strong. He just signed a four-year, $30.25 million fully guaranteed contract with the New York Jets, giving him the chance to head to training camp and get to work.
But when Darnold isn’t working and has time to kick back and relax, he enjoys going to the beach.
Having grown up in Southern California and attending the University of Southern California, Darnold knows his way around the sand.
Here’s what he brings when he hits the beach:
1. Sunscreen: “I cannot go to the beach without sunscreen. I need like SPF 1,000! I typically use Neutrogena sunscreen. It was always the go-to brand for my family growing up, and I still use it—especially their Sport line, which stays on no matter how much I sweat.”
2. Sunflower Seeds: “I’ll always bring a bag of sunflower seeds with me. I can just grab a handful on the go and it’s a quick, easy snack.”
3. Volleyball/Frisbee: When it comes to volleyball, Darnold will go for a Wilson brand ball. “Usually me and my friends bring down with us a volleyball or frisbee. You want a game that you can play that doesn’t require that much space, but still gets everyone involved.”
4. Hat/Sunglasses: You can’t go wrong with a Jets or USC-themed hat, and as for shades, Darnold likes Nike specs. “I always go to the beach with a hat or sunglasses. Sometimes both. It’s not just about protecting your skin from the sun, but also your eyes.”
5. Towels: Darnold is partial to Hurley towels when he hits the beach. “You can’t just sit on the sand! My friends always just bring a bunch of towels and lay them out so they connect into almost like a blanket.”
