Black Diamond Camalot Z4
Climbers insert retractable cams in rock to act as anchors in case they fall. A sling connects the cam to the climber’s rope. But sometimes a cam can get pulled by the sling, move to a less secure place, or even pop out. Existing cams don’t bend, which makes them easy to insert but prone to getting tugged on awkwardly. The Camalot Z4 solves the problem. It’s stiff when a climber goes to insert it, a one-handed job, but it flexes once it’s in place so it’s way less likely to get dislodged. The head of the cam is similar to Black Diamond’s existing Camalot C3, but the four lobes are sandblasted for better holding power. Iit’s available in #0 to .75 so you can dial in your rack for the adventure. [$70; blackdiamondequipment.com]
