History: This is the car that Dustin Hoffman drove in 1967’s The Graduate. It became so married to that movie that in the eighties Alfa began calling the car the Graduate Spider. Hoffman was a nephew of an Alfa Romeo importer, thus enabling one of the first great moments in product placement.
Design: That the Alfa was serendipitously cast is clear. The car seemed to be built to navigate the passage between college and real life. It was an early midlife-crisis machine, far less pathetic than an actual midlife-crisis machine. Lurking underneath the Alfa’s adorable bodywork was the tortured soul of a lover, and the Duetto – not quite a sports car, not quite a tourer – embodied the confusion of the young male animal.Back to top
