History: The Countach’s mission was to dust them all as the highest-performing ultracar in the world. When it came out in 1974 it had a 3.9-liter engine churning out 375 hp. Subsequent models grew bigger engines, but they also grew air scoops and strakes like tumors, infecting the purity of the original shape.
Design: “Countach” is Italian slang for “Holy shit!” Nuccio Bertone, whose design house was responsible for the car, allegedly yelled the word upon seeing the sketches. His words continue to be a common rejoinder to a passing Countach. In breaking out of the classicism of the fifties and sixties, its origami-inspired lines influenced almost every other car of the seventies.Back to top
