Most plants like soil with a neutral pH (around 7). To find out if yours is too acidic or alkaline, send a sample to your local cooperative extension, which will test it and tell you how to fix it. Less accurate DIY tests are available online, but we recommend leaving it to the pros your first time around. The simplest fix for subpar soil is a healthy dose of compost.
