Mammut Smart 2.0 Belay Package
Your standard ATC may suffice in the gym where hazards are almost nonexistent, but for the outdoors, you need some backup. A beginner outdoor belayer (and even an advanced belayer) should have an assisted braking function in the instance you get knocked out. Leaving a climber literally hanging isn’t the worst scenario, but dropping them is. While the Mammut Smart 2.0 has a slightly steeper learning curve than a standard ATC, we only had to refer to the instructions as a backup. Learning how to lower with it wasn’t immediately obvious, but once we figured out how its tilt lowering mechanism worked, it made lowering (even on thin, slick ropes) ultra smooth and easy to control. This kit also comes with a locking carabiner with a safety gate that ensures the device is locked and the rope won’t twist the carabiner and cross-load it.
