2004: TomTom GO
Like many of our picks, the once-astonishing advent of GPS-based turn-by-turn navigation is now just another app. But that doesn't make the TomTom GO any less of a revolution. Launched some 12 years ago, it was the first portable GPS navigation device. While other nav systems still had to be set up with PCs or synced with PDAs, and had messy, external GPS receivers, the GO integrated its receiver and maps into a single unit, and boasted a 3.5-inch color screen. The road atlas was finally, mercifully dead.
