2012: Tesla Model S
The Tesla Roadster came first, and so did Nissan's Leaf. But the Model S is the most successful fully electric vehicle (EV) to date. It's 265-mile range pushed the limits of lithium-ion battery tech, it earned rave reviews from the performance-obsessed automotive press, and it's consistently sold more units every year, including 50,580 in 2015, an increase of more than 50 percent over 2014. The Model S was the first real preview of the EV fleets still to come.
