The Light Kit for Action Cams

Action cameras, like the GoPro, have validated bragging rights for countless adrenaline sports junkies, but they're still pretty lousy in low light, especially underwater. The GoBe – made by Light & Motion, the California company that builds high-powered headlamps, bike lights and dive torches – aims to solve that problem.

It's a hybrid lighting system that can go from trail to bike helmet to underwater, thanks to its modular design and variety of mounts. The Action Camera Kit pairs two of these lights (spot and flood) with a camera tray and two flexible arms. Mount the camera on the tray, fire up the lights and go forth into the deep.

We recently took the GoBe Action Camera Kit scuba diving in the Galapagos Islands to try it out with a GoPro HERO 3. The whole package travels well, folding in on itself for a neat fit in a carry-on. Once on the dive boat, we clipped the kit to our buoyancy vest, back-rolled into the water and then, at depth, clicked on the lights and started shooting.

The powerful 700-lumen twin flood beams added much needed color to the reef fish and topography and gave enough light to make videos crisp and noise-free. The tray was sturdy, but we found the flexible arms a little too flimsy for use as handles. On a dive when we left the camera behind, we could still use the GoBE lights to scout for octopi under rocks and for waking up sleeping whitetip sharks – as ill-advised as that may sound.
