The Minimalist’s Commuter Bike

We test a lot of bikes here at ‘Men’s Journal.’ A lot: We considered 28 for our fall commuter roundup alone. And despite the saddle sores we’ve accumulated, we can report with confidence that there are few more reliable ways to get to work than astride a Specialized Source Eleven. To be clear, it isn’t stylish. But it is steady, smooth, and seemingly unshakeable; we almost get the feeling that were we to fall asleep at the handlebars, it would still find a way to get us to the office (and for the price, maybe it should.)

Some of its core competence comes from a sturdy alloy frame, internal 11-speed hub, and scarily responsive disc brakes. We’re also fans of the belt drive and front and rear fenders – a one-two combo that ensures our Outliers stay grease-and-dirt-free. But where this ride really shines is with its integrated, pedal-powered lights, which facilitate passage to those morning meetings under every condition, whether you want to be there or not.

Just don’t be late. After all, somebody’s got to get the tab for this thing. [$2,750;]
