Skiers Get a Snowboard Boot Binding
The boldest product launch at this year’s show was the Madjack Ski Binding for snowboard boots. We’re not talking about splitboarding here — this is literally a binding designed for your alpine skis that allows you to wear more comfortable snowboard boots. It took an aerospace engineer to get this right — the founder of Madjack, Eric Mehiel, is, in fact, a rocket scientist and professor at Cal Poly — and the tech is still in its infancy (Madjack debuted its prototype at SIA and will roll out product in time for the 2017/'18 season, for around $199). A three-buckle system at the toe, ankle, and calf is what creates the stiffness needed, while injection molding makes it strong, and clever design keeps it light and compact (it folds like a clam shell). It’s a niche market, for sure, but it just might be the perfect tool for anyone who jumps back and forth between snowboarding and skiing (one boot, two sports), or for splitboarders who hate the edging limitations of regular bindings.
