Best in Show and Best Mountain Bike Award: Altruiste Bicycle Company
Canada’s Altruiste Bikes took home the Best in Show award for this steel full suspension trail bike. (It won the Best Mountain Bike Award as well.) “One of the goals with this project was to design a frame with as few pieces as possible,” says builder Gabriel Lang. “I wanted a clean and uncluttered design since simplicity usually translates to reliability and weight savings.” He achieved this by offsetting the shock to the left side of the curved seat tube and using a bottom bracket-centric swing-arm pivot to reduce hardware. A piece of tubing welded inside the downtube connects the shock mount and BB shell to further improve rigidity without cluttering the aesthetics. Lang wanted the build to be as North American as possible. Canada’s Straitline Components provided the stem, pedals, and seatpost clamp and 9point8 provided the dropper post. The Industry Nine wheelset, DVO suspension, SRAM drivetrain, as well as the True-Temper steel tubing used to construct the frame all represent the United States.
