Best Road Bike: J.P. Weigle
J.P. Weigle won prizes for Best Road Bike and Best Lugged Frame with a bike that wasn’t intended to be a show bike at NAHBS. “It was built to be used at the Concours de Machines competition in Ambert, France last summer,” says builder Peter Weigle. “The event consisted of two challenging rides in the mountains over two days to test each bike’s performance and durability. Points were deducted if the bike had any problems or broken parts—or if the rider didn’t finish the course in the allotted time. Bonus points were given for technical innovations and light weight.” Weigle’s bike finished second overall and was recognized for being the lightest bike to finish the event. It weighs in at an incredible 20 pounds, an impressive achievement for a lugged steel bike with full fenders, front and rear racks, generator-powered lights, bottle cages, a bell, and a pump.
