Volkswagen has unveiled the newest edition to their T6 Transporter van collection, lovingly known as vanagons, with the California camper. The successor to the old-school Westfalia bus, the California Camper puts the emphasis on outdoor recreation, taking care of all your camping needs with the ability to fit up to seven people, sleep five. Other amenities include a kitchen sink, a pop-top, and a dual-burner gas-range stovetop. The model comes in three variations, the Beach, Coast, and Ocean — each with a different range of gasoline or diesel power-train options, with either 83, 100, 147, or 201 horsepower.

Unfortunately, despite the name, the California Camper series isn't being sold in the U.S., but advance sales have begun in Germany, where the prices start at roughly $46,000. Your best bets are to beef up a vintage Westfalia or Transporter model for an authentic vanagon experience or stick to the newest stateside adventure vehicles. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander sports a rooftop pop-up clamshell tent. And the Sportsmobile Ultimate Adventure Vehicle, built on a Ford E-350 cargo van, is spacious while able to cover the most rugged roads.
