To hear Apple tell it, the electronics company today unveiled a brand new product to revolutionize the mobile marketplace. That device is the iPhone SE, a 4-inch phone with a slender form factor that might not look like much compared the iPhone 6 and 6S, but still packs a convenient wallop under the hood. Here’s what you need to know about Cupertino's "most powerful 4-inch phone ever."
Despite its smaller size, it’s still just as powerful as the iPhone 6S.
This new baby brother to Apple’s smartphone line is on par with the size of the older iPhone 5, but it’s packing the same zippy A9 processor that inhabits Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhone 6S. Despite the SE’s diminutive size, it has the same formidable specs as a much larger phone, crunching math problems and processing graphics with an identical CPU speed.
It comes in 16 or 64 GB models.
Those models will cost you $399 and $499 respectively. You’ll also have your choice of white, space gray, gold, or rose gold finishes.
The camera is better than you’d expect.
By and large, it’s the same camera on your iPhone 6 and 6S. Capture 12-megapixel photographs and 4K video without breaking a sweat.
There is no 3D Touch.
One of the standout features of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is an interaction mechanism that allowed the device to register different kinds of taps, such as long or hard taps. These added an extra layer of interactivity with one’s apps, but this feature will be missing from the iPhone SE. If 3D Touch is your favorite feature, you’re going to be a little heartbroken here.
It has faster LTE.
The iPhone SE has some improved cellular radios in its guts, making for faster internet speeds and clearer voice quality. Can you hear me now? Most likely, yes.
It still runs all your favorite iPhone apps.
It’s still an iPhone just like other iPhones, but it’s just in a smaller shell than we’ve come to expect from Apple lately. This is not a reinvention of Apple’s product line, just a small, new wrinkle in it that will be a perfect fit for some folks.
You can order it starting March 24 for $399.
