A Superbike for the Rest of Us
Yamaha R1 S
It bears a strong resemblance to the outrageously powerful R1, but Yamaha’s new R1 S takes a step back from the horsepower wars with a slightly dialed-down engine that revs to 12,500 rpm, not the full 14,000. Because most riders are unlikely to fully tap into the R1’s ludicrous power on public roads, the R1 S makes a great substitute for Yamaha’s superbike flagship: It offers comparable handling (though with less sticky tires), while avoiding the massive horsepower that sets the R1 apart. Perhaps best of all? The R1 S retains the R1’s signature mean looks.
