8. Newport Folk Festival
When and Where: July 25-27; Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island
Headliners: Robert Hunter*; Jimmy Cliff; Mavis Staples
Best of the A-List: Shovels & Rope; Dawes; Phox
Ins and Outs: The Newport Folk Festival is where Bob Dylan famously went electric for the first time — and depending on reports, was either loudly booed or applauded (it all probably sounded the same from Dylan’s vantage point). These days, the festival includes one of the greatest lineups of musicians of all the summer festivals — and sells out quickly on account of it (see Ticket Information). The fest’s grounds are located right on Newport Harbor, so if you’re looking for great vistas to go with your hefty helping of music, you will not be let down.
Insider Information: *This year, Robert Hunter, the wizard-behind-the-curtain of the Grateful Dead (i.e. the guy that wrote the majority of the band’s lyrics), is performing a rare set. As in, this may be one of his only appearances this summer.
Getting There: On-site parking costs anywhere from $12-$36; however, the festival allows bicyclists to “park” their ride on site; and there are ride-sharing options, too, for the eco-minded.
Ticket Information: Single-day Friday ($66.25 w/o tax); 3-Day, 2-Day, and single-day Saturday and Sunday passes sold out. (As with most festivals that sell out super early, finding face-value tickets the week or even day of is pretty easy; you just have to be prepared to pay a premium.)
