What Not to Use
Some people are successful using supplements to treat their migraines. These include magnesium, coenzyme Q10, and Petadolek’s butterbur. Cutrer has been advising people against Petadolek’s butterbur because it may cause liver problems. As for the others, they don’t have much scientific support and Cutrer hasn’t seen much evidence that they have a significant effect. Still, people who haven’t found relief in other remedies may want to try supplements. They should do so carefully. “I just tell [people] to use them with caution and to be very clear in their assessment of whether it helps them or not,” says Cutrer.
