Exercises Aren’t Modified or Progressed
If your trainer refuses to modify an exercise, or if he hasn’t made adjustments to your resistance in weeks, it’s time for a “come to Jesus” conversation. Dale says this is particularly prevalent when trainers start working with older or less-conditioned clients, often pigeonholing them as beginners and forcing them to continue beginner-level exercises for far too long. “When I see a client pick up the three-pound weights for a back squat, I think to myself, ‘Is this trainer really invested in helping their client gain strength, or are they just trying to pass the hour’s time?’” says Dale. If your workout has seemed far too easy (or far too difficult) for more than a week, ask your trainer what gives, and if he doesn’t supply a reasonable response, consider hiring someone new.
