Myth: Some stress is good for you.
The belief that some level of stress is good or helpful is probably not talking about stress in the strict sense. "I would define stress as a mismatch between the demands that someone faces and the resources they have available to deal with those demands," says David Ballard, assistant executive director of the American Psychological Association’s Center for Organizational Excellence. Understood that way, stress can't be a positive thing because it refers to something that is beyond what a person can handle. Arousal or stimulation, on the other hand, are often referred to as "stress" and can be motivating, engaging, and challenging in a positive way.Back to top
