Myth: You need better coping skills.
Ballard has conducted his fair share of stress-management workshops for workplaces. These are a nice perk to provide employees, but may follow some flawed thinking. “There’s often a myth that when someone is stressed out, the problem lies in that individual,” says Ballard. Sometimes there is simply too much on their plate, and blaming their coping abilities won’t help anyone. As Ballard puts it, “If all you’re going to do is give people more armor and then throw them back into the same horrible environment, that’s not the most effective strategy.” So, if your whole office is stressed out, it doesn’t hurt to set up a stress management workshop, but also consider that the way you’re running things might need to change.
