Use Technology Like a Crutch
Technology may be partially to blame for your growing gut, but it’s also pretty great at reminding you to stay active. Fitness wearables like the Fitbit Blaze and the Apple Watch make it easy to set hourly activity goals with corresponding notifications that remind you to get up and move around. Even if you’re not a big fan of wearables, you can download apps, like the Move It! app on Google Play or the Move app on iTunes, to receive similar alerts on your phone.
And don’t assume short bursts of activity aren’t worth the effort. A 2016 study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found that five-minute “microbursts” of activity dispersed throughout the day were effective at improving the energy, vigor, mood, and fatigue of office workers while simultaneously reducing food cravings.
