Recently, celebrity coach, author, and all-around fitness guru Todd Durkin was sequestered in a hotel room for nine days. He was filming a top-secret project and under strict orders to stay put. Amazingly, he didn’t miss a single workout.
“When you’re a trainer stuck in a room, you get really, really creative,” he says, adding that he had to take the no-excuses mentality he instills in his clients (who have included NFL stars like Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson) and turn it on himself. “Just getting that ‘no excuses, get it in’ mindset is half the battle.”
What isn’t part of the battle? Stressing out about what equipment you do or don’t have. Durkin says that bodyweight workouts can be just as effective as sessions on cutting-edge equipment. And while ideally you should do a mix of both bodyweight and weighted exercises, if you don’t have access to a gym, you can get surprising results from sweating in your own living room — or hotel, or airport terminal, or office.
Here are seven home workouts that will render all of your excuses useless. None of them require any equipment, and most require very little time. Keep these handy and you’ll never have to take an unplanned rest day again.
