Texas A & M’s Hydrogel Condom (With Antioxidants!)
Mahua Choudhury, an assistant professor in the school of pharmacy at Texas A & M is another Gates Foundation grant recipient. Her proposed condom would be made of a new type of hydrogel — the same type of material contact lenses are made off — and it would be embedded with an antioxidant called quercetin, which has been shown to increase blood flow and have anti-HIV properties. “The idea is out of the box and very bold. It can fail even, you never know,” says Choudhury. As with many of these innovations, Choudhury’s project is still in its very early stages. However, if it makes it to the end, she says it will be inexpensive and have significant medical value.
