In ultramarathon-ing, walking is not a faux pas. “So many people have a problem with that,” says Jurek. But a lot of these races are on the trail with a lot of steep uphills, which are a good time to give your muscles a break. “I’m a big believer in using the terrains as a time to walk,” he says. “Or if things aren’t gong well.” You might be able to run 80 or 90 percent of your ultra, but use the terrain. Use how you’re feeling. If you’re having a rough patch, walking can get you through, and it will help with muscle fatigue.
