Lifting Too Quickly
For all the time you’re dedicating to rest between sets, you’re probably not dedicating enough time to your actual exercise. “Most research suggests muscle growth and building needs around 30 seconds under tension to adapt,” says Darin Hulslander, the owner of DNS Performance and Nutrition. “Those speedy sets of 10 sometimes take less than 10 seconds! I’ll often put a metronome next to a client and ask them to do two seconds going down and one second going up. That’ll bring most people back down to Earth.”
