Performing Static Stretches Before Your Workout
Those pre-workout static stretches you did in the ‘80s aren’t doing you any favors. “I’d rather see people not stretch at all than to hold stretches before a workout,” says physical therapist Dr. Jasmine Marcus. “Static stretches have been shown to reduce strength, power, and speed, which is the last thing you want to do before exercising intensely.”
Instead, incorporate dynamic stretches into your warm-up routine as a way to help prepare your muscles for the work ahead of them. Try bodyweight squats taken through a full range of motion, walking lunges, spider planks, or a 10-minute yoga flow. A few minutes on a foam roller is another great way to help stimulate the muscle groups you’re about to work.
