Have your eating and exercise habits changed?
In both seasonal and year-round depression, change in weight and/or appetite can be a warning symptom. But the type of change can be an indication of the problem. “People with a seasonal form of depression more often have trouble getting up — they feel too sleepy and eat too much," says Janis Anderson, PhD and Clinical Psychologist at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. "That sometimes happens with other types of major depression, but more often, someone with year-round depression loses their appetite and has insomnia." It’s unknown what causes this difference, but Anderson says sufferers of year-round depression also tend to have higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their systems at night, which could be a contributing factor.Back to top
