Three years passed since we last rounded up America’s fittest and fattest cities, and when we did research for our latest Fattest & Fittest Cities list, we found that obesity rates have worsened at an alarming rate. 33.8% of American adults are now obese. In fact, the last time we tried this, fewer than six states had an obesity rate above 30%. That number is now up to 12.
There’s hope, though. The fitness industry is booming—a least when it comes to innovation—and enrollment in user-friendly programs like CrossFit has increased exponentially. There’s still work to be done, however.
If you live in one of this year’s fattest cities, it’s not all doom and gloom. We’ve got solutions for you, so you can turn this big-boy list on its head, one pound at a time. The top five fattest cities are not the landlocked hell holes you’d expect, either. Most are coastal locales with reasonable green space throughout them—most are also crawling with excellent boot camps, kettlebell workshops, CrossFit gyms and boxing gyms galore that deliver real results. HIT Fit Boot Camp is a brutal but balanced program (post-workout massage, anyone? You’ve got it. Nutrition coaching? Check.). Your coach is a self-professed “former fat kid.” And what about the staggeringly low price you pay for this pre- or post-work skinny pill? Only $40 per month for UNLIMITED classes—I challenge you to find a better deal.
At Fitness Boot Camp 4 You Casey Castro kicks off his all-encompassing program with a comprehensive meal plan, then you’ll dive head-first into the massive weight loss and muscle gain you’re after. There are five years of success stories for you to be inspired by, which means one thing: His team of certified trainers knows exactly what they’re doing. Prices vary, but the standard rate is $209 for 3-days-a-week 4-week regimens.
Tried every other “trick” in the fitness book? Get results from the real thing with Josh One’s Warrior Fit Camp, a 6-week co-ed burner that’ll set you back only $217. Only you set your limits—Josh’s FitCamp will push you beyond it.
Primal Fire Boot Camp will incinerate fat by running you through Russian kettlebells, cardio and classic exercises, giving you the total-body burn you’re looking for.

Jeff Waters delivers a solid outdoor boot camp for any fitness level, with circuit-style training, speed and agility workouts, and boxing. Fit Boot Camp is an indoor/outdoor 4-week training onslaught to your body-to-be including kettlebell, plyometrics, card and beach workout—every inspiration you need to get in peak shape. It’s not men’s specific, but you’ll undoubtedly be pushed to your own limits to break through plateaus. $210
Kieran Sernig has hardcore intensity waiting for you right on Raby Bay. This kind of outdoor group challenge really gets your head in the game, and is offered year-round to get you to your goal with no room for excuses. What’s best, an 11-week boot camp will set you back only $5-$10 per session!
There are 34 parks within downtown Memphis, but you want to get fit, not take a stroll.
Hadley’s Boxing lets you go kick some butt while getting your own into shape, so you can eventually float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.
BCOR Fitness offers phenomenally infectious training and nutrition advice across the nation, and there are three locations in the Memphis area. This indoor/outdoor, and very social boot camp will fry you fit! Classes are held week after week.
BPC PeakFit in East Memphis is designed for your all-out speed, strength, and weight loss conditioning. $20 for 1 session, $90 for 6 or $89 for monthly unlimited access.
Strength Camp is a hardcore athlete training facility, but they also run a boot camp to burn fat and get shredded. They require you to fill out an application and complete a brief interview—just to make sure you’re ready for pain—but after that, your strength coach will help you turn it all around. Basic membership is $100 for 45–60 mins, 3–5 times per week.
Al Rosen’s Fitness and Conditioning Camp has a 2-Day Tri-Fitness Conditioning as well as a True Grit Challenge.
Powerhouse Gym programs include O2 cycling, cross training and personal training.
Adventure in Movement (AIM) Boot Camp is a men’s only program where you can make fast buddies as you flip tires, hurl sand sacks, do speed and agility drills and occasionally jump into multi-sport territory with rope challenges and rock climbing. AIM hands you the tools you need to get in peak fitness.
Tampa Bay Club Sport Boot Camp runs the gamut for beginning and advanced athletes alike to get fit in Tampa and St. Petersburg. They run 11 boot camps throughout the year, can prorate your start date (taking away excuses of “too late”), and promise to blast your ass into shape using obstacle courses, resistance training, combat techniques. And after you’re successfully singeing calories on your own, join one of the dozens of team sports that the club has organized. $150 for 5 weeks
