Forget fancy leashes and grooming—for some dogs, winning best in show is a matter of athletic ability.
Eager athletic canines and their human coaches gathered Sunday at Toto’s Park Club, a dog park in Rio’s Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, where dogs competed in events like swimming, jumping, running, hurdling, and diving, according to the Associated Press. Some dogs even took part in a ‘decathlon,’ which featured an agility course and a long jump that challenged the loyal dogs to chase after a tennis ball thrown into a pool.
Marco Antonio Toto, who owns the dog park, told the AP that he hopes to hold the event every year and that he wants to “socialize humans and their pets” and celebrate sports at the same time.
One of the big winners at the Olympics was Mima, a nearly one-year old beagle, who won the aquatic jumping event at the competition. “I didn’t even know she had all this talent,” her owner, Aura Stella, told the AP.
