In an industry known for excess and indulgence, Chance the Rapper, 24, is rejecting self-promotion in favor of social activism.

Born in Chicago, a city struggling with gang violence and record murder statistics, Chance recently promised $1 million to the city’s public school system, of which he is a product. He also announced that his charity, SocialWorks, would give another $10,000 for every additional $100,000 raised.
