One third of the world’s population is overweight or obese, according to the World Health Organization’s estimates. We’ve got a huge problem, and since drastic times call for drastic measures, scientists have thought up an interesting solution: chili peppers.
Researchers from the University of Wyoming’s School of Pharmacy believe capsaicin, the chief ingredient in chili peppers, is a promising potential diet-based supplement.
In the study, researchers found that capsaicin prevented weight gain in mice, even when test subjects were fed a high-fat diet. The capsaicin didn’t affect their intake of water or food, though it did significantly increase their metabolic activity and energy expenditure.
Capsaicin has the potential to stimulate energy burning by activating receptors in white and brown fat cells, which could help to manage or even prevent obesity and other related health concerns like Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.
The researchers have submitted a patent application for the drug, so stay tuned.
