In an apocalyptic future, the mutants are gone—but Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine isn’t ready to give up yet.
The first trailer for Logan, Jackman’s final turn as the cigar-chomping hero, has been released, giving fans a look at an older, bloodied, worn-down version of the X-Men fan-favorite. Wolverine warns his mentor, an aging Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), that “the world isn’t the same as it was” as the (perfectly picked) Johnny Cash cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” plays over the footage.
Jackman’s Wolverine has battle scars from years of fighting—not all of them visible—and is sporting a heavy beard and a labored walk as he travels through this new world. The film has a sci-fi Western feel to it, as we see Logan battle with Boyd Holbrook’s bionic-armed villain Donald Pierce and his gang of “Reavers,” all on the hunt for Wolverine and his new companion, a young girl with mutant powers just like his:
The final 30 seconds of the trailer is a brilliant piece of editing. Just as Cash’s voice hits its most powerful note, we get shots of Wolverine spinning out in a car, soldiers descending on a hideout, Holbrook chasing Logan across the desert, and Wolverine unleashing his claws in a rage—it’s dramatic, forceful, emotional, and undeniably badass.

Jackman is holding nothing back for his final turn as the hero—and that alone could make this one of the best comic book films we’ve seen in a long time.
Logan, directed by James Mangold and starring Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, and Eriq La Salle, will be released on March 3, 2017.
