Hedge fund guys do CrossFit. So do cops. And construction workers, engineers, and professors. (Even rock stars, too!) Here are their stories.

Recently my father passed away and my brother and young daughter were both diagnosed with diabetes. I signed up for my first mud run and needed to train for it. I hate running, but get me crap to crawl over or barbed wire to go under, and I’m all in. I started CrossFit and went paleo, and felt like I was 20 years old again. I finished 551st out of 6,974.
I started doing CrossFit regularly, competing in challenges, and doing some part-time personal training. The personal training was where I got to know the woman that would change my life. She was at one of my weekend exercise sessions and she asked me to train her. There were moments, like when I’m trying to show her something with kettlebells or help her with her form—man, you couldn’t cut the tension with a chainsaw. It was incredible.
Seeing her results—she was really buying into it—was tremendous. We went from training together two or three times a week to spending all our time together. I fell hard and heavy, especially when, after working out, I saw her dancing with my daughter while watching something on TV. I would never have had this woman in my life without CrossFit.
One of my favorite things is that when I meet people and if they see me with my shirt off—in summer I hardly ever have my shirt on—they ask me what I do. When I tell them it’s CrossFit, they say, “That stuff’s insane.” And I smile and grin, and say, “Yeah it is.” But what’s really insane is that people are scared of trying it. It’s a lifestyle, not a fad, and I’m all in. I drink the Kool-Aid. It’s pretty exciting. –As told to David Wescott
