On This Day in History: “The Dark Knight” Breaks Box Office Records

On this day in history The Dark Knight, the fifth film in the Batman series, opened in theaters around the United States. It beat out Spider Man 3, scoring what was then the highest-grossing opening weekend of any movie in history with $158 million.

The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale as Batman, who is famous for going to extremes to “become” the character he is playing for a film. For his role in The Machinist,  he dropped 120 pounds to portray an anorexic, insomniac factory worker. For The Dark Knight, Bale bulked up to a rock-solid 220 pounds.

Ben Affleck is next up to star as Batman in the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and he’s going for a real-life superhero look. Affleck is working out twice a day, and at 6’4″, he promises to be a daunting presence on the big screen.
