Another piece of retro cardio equipment on the rise is the air bike. If you’re not familiar, this bike features standard bike pedals and a padded seat, with the addition of moving handlebars and a front “wheel” that houses a cage-enclosed fan.
Unlike traditional cycling workouts, where most of the focus is on your lower body, the air bike is a whole different animal. The movement is completely self-powered, lacks the benefit of momentum, and the faster you move your arms and legs to set the fan in motion, the greater the resistance becomes. As you pedal, push, and pull, the fan spins, catching air and increasing the resistance. In fact, it’s a favorite of Tough Mudder trainer Eric Botsford, specifically because it’s so hard. “It has the perfect balance of creating a smooth ride with absolute pain,” he says. So if that’s what you’re going for, the air bike delivers.
