“Doc” Rivers and Austin Rivers are the only father-son duo working on the court in the NBA. As coach of the Boston Celtics, former player Doc has won over 400 games and a National Championship. Austin, who averaged 6.2 points per game last year as a rookie with the New Orleans Hornets – now the Pelicans – not only followed his father into basketball, but has actually played against them. Son beat father.
Doc and Austin recently spoke with MensJournal.com editor Tom Samiljan in a Google Hangout – part of the Google+ ‘The Fatherhood’ series – to talk about their relationship on and off the court and how men with grown sons can learn to relate to their fathers in new ways. Also on the hangout: dad bloggers Jim Higley (Bobblehead Dad) and Fred Goodall (Mocha Dad). The Rivers story is, after all, a classic tale of a man following in his father’s footsteps. The only difference with the hulking Rivers men is the size of their feet. (Click on the video above to watch the Hangout.)
