Batman has met his match.
He’s a tax specialist.
The first trailer for the new Ben Affleck film The Accountant has been released—and it shows off a ton of action, intrigue, and…math?
Affleck stars as the money manager Christian Wolff, evidently some kind of savant who deals with bullies by, uh, punching them directly in the face. By “deals with bullies,” we mean “secretly works as an assassin,” and by “punching them directly in the face” we mean, well, “punching them directly in the face.”
Hot on his trail are members of the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, led by Ray King (J.K. Simmons). Wolff, it seems, has some semblance of a normal life—a love interest (Anna Kendrick), a perfectly oriented breakfast of pancakes, bacon, and eggs—but he also has an arsenal full of machine guns and a supreme command of math.
Basically, he’s Jason Bourne, if Jason Bourne were Matt Damon’s character from Good Will Hunting, and played by Matt Damon’s friend from Good Will Hunting.
The haunting sound of Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place” plays over the trailer as Affleck gets down and dirty. Affleck’s Wolff looks comfortable rocking wire-frame glasses, a shirt and tie, and a pocket protector—but he looks even more natural when he’s behind the barrel of a sniper rifle.
Affleck is keeping up his action streak with The Accountant after starring as Batman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and he has another thriller coming on the horizon—the gangster period film Live by Night, which he also wrote and directed.
The Accountant, directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Lithgow, will be released October 14, 2016.
