2. ‘Gangs of New York’ – 2002
Day-Lewis took five years off from acting to take up woodworking and to become an apprentice with Italian shoemaker Stefano Bemer, but the wait was worth it for this historical epic from Martin Scorsese that started what might be the most amazing run in Day-Lewis’ career. Day-Lewis played the maniacal, ultra-patriotic Bill “The Butcher” Cutting, a ruthless gangster and mid-19th century New York City figure who ran the Five Points district. Day-Lewis received some of the best reviews of his career, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
